The surreal scene happened in Monrovia where the sitting president, George Weah , 51, played 79 minutes during an international fixture which was organised in his honour.

A Popular Hero

The event was held in honour of George Weah, a former professional football player, and the only African player to win the Fifa’s World Player of the Year award as well as the prestigious ‘Ballon d’or’, who had his jersey retired.

George Weah during an illustrious career played for Monaco,Paris St Germain,  Manchester City, Chelsea, Marseille, and AC Milan where his performances earned him the Ballon d’Or.

After he retired from sports he entered politics in his home country forming the Congress for Democratic Change party. With this political outfit, he was an active member of the opposition and was an unfortunate presidential election candidate in 2005. In 2017, he again ran for president and won.

Liberia lost the match 2-1 with Simeon Nkwankwo , and Henry Onyekuru both netting a goal for Nigeria and Kpah Sherman , scoring a late penalty for Liberia.

The Liberian team faced a full-force Nigerian team which featured Ex Man City striker Kelechi Iheanacho , Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi as well as Stoke City’s Peter Etebo.

George Weah was substituted off at the 79th Minute.
